Description

Meet Matchæologist (抹茶オロジスト): an artisanal matcha specialist born from a founder's journey into Japan's tea culture, who trained as a monk in Uji before dedicating himself to preserving its centuries old craftsmanship. Today, Matchæologist works closely with matcha sommeliers and craftsmen in Kyoto to define the ultimate matcha ritual experience, growing every leaf in Uji, the world famous terroir long considered the ultimate ground for matcha cultivation. Each batch is artisan roasted in small quantities using proprietary techniques, more akin to fine wine than fast tea, treating matcha not as a drink but as a ceremony worth doing properly.

Grown in Uji, Kyoto's legendary tea growing region, Misaki is Matchæologist's highest ceremonial grade, artisan roasted in small batches for rich umami, roasted caramel and malted honey notes. Suited to both light and thick preparations, it's matcha made for those who want to taste every part of the ritual.

Sustainable Packaging

Packaging that protects
Almost all of our packaging is recyclable, reusable or compostable and is marked with logos to support correct disposal.

Compostable teabags
Our tea has come packed in compostable teabags since 2021. Made from plant- based materials, both bag and string are made from Polylactic Acid (PLA), with a paper tag printed with vegetable ink. Heat-sealed, they’re also glue and staple-free.
Polylactic Acid is a biodegradable bioplastic made from plant sources – in our case, we've used corn starch.

Compostable shopping bags
Shopping in-store? Our uncoated shopping bags can be recycled (when you’re done reusing them). Please note, there is a small charge for carry bags.

Plant-based polybags
Our loose-leaf tea is wrapped in compostable plant-based polybags, which are compostable. We recommend checking with your local government’s green waste pick up service before placing bioplastics in your home compost bins.

Greener gift wrap
Aside from our stickers, our gift wrap is entirely recyclable.
