Caffeine Tea For Sustainable Energy
Fuelling up with caffeine tea is a coffee-free way to kick-start your day with the added bonus of tea’s abundant health benefits!
How much caffeine is in tea?
Aside from herbal teas and floral tisanes, many types of tea are harvested from camellia sinensis tea plants which contain caffeine but the caffeine levels in tea varies depending on:
- The region in which the tea plant is grown.
- The amount of rainfall the tea plant receives.
- Specific harvesting processes.
- Varied processing and fermenting times and methods.
As it is fully fermented for the longest time of all types of tea, black tea wins with the award for the highest caffeine content in tea, closely followed by oolong, green tea and white tea.
What types of tea have caffeine?
Coffee is tops for caffeine-fuelled morning energy boosts, but tea drinkers can jet-propel their floating boats with:
- Butt-kicking black tea
- Mighty matcha
- Spicy chai tea
- Gregarious green tea
- Oodles of oolong tea
- Popular pu-erh tea
- Fresh as a daisy white tea
Fun Fact: While black tea has loads less caffeine than coffee, pure and elegant white tea has lots less caffeine than black tea.
Does green tea have caffeine?
That would be a green light go ahead if you want a smidge of caffeine in your splash of green tea. Green tea undergoes minimal fermentation though, so your caffeine intake from green tea isn’t big.

Does chai have caffeine?
Oooh trick question! Chai is a generally a black tea blend infused with scentsational aromatic spices such as cinnamon, cloves, cardamom and ginger, but the black tea component means chai is a tea with caffeine.
BUT if you love a cup of chai and don’t want caffeine, try spying your little eye on a cup of Spi Chai Loose Leaf Herbal Tisane. Spi Chai’s fragrant ingredients are exclusively cardamon, star anise, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, liquorice root, jasmine blossoms and rose petals. Black tea wasn’t invited so that means no caffeine wing-man at this tea party!
Does rooibos tea have caffeine?
Now that’s a tricky one, because rooibos tea is a black tea. BUT rooibos is also a South African plant which is caffeine-free, so you won’t get your caffeine kick-start from a cup of rooibos tea.
Do different teas have different amounts of caffeine?
They certainly do. Each type of tea is harvested, fermented and processed differently so the caffeine in tea types varies quite a lot.
