T2 connected with Jo-Ann and Goanna Hut 18 months ago through Global Sisters, which exists to make business possible for women, enabling them to be financially resilient and stand tall. They provide a genuine alternative for women who are unable to participate in mainstream employment or access decent, sustainable work.
Our mission is to celebrate difference to make a difference. We connect with the people who make our tea blends possible, getting to know the cultures, backgrounds and philosophies that lie at the heart of what they do.
T2: What does it mean to you to be able to share your culture and heritage with people through your love of cooking and tea?
Jo-Ann: It’s the look on people’s faces when they try my teas or trying an Emu sausage roll, ice cream or even modern cupcakes.
T2: We’re excited to stock three of your beautiful tea blends, can you tell us a bit about the creation process and how you chose the ingredients?
Jo-Ann: My tea blends all have a family connection, and I based my blends on taste, using native flavours mixed with an Australian-grown green tea.
T2: What role has tea played in your upbringing?
Jo-Ann: At every time of day someone was having a cuppa of some sort, from lemon myrtle to a fruit blend.
T2: Can you tell us a bit about your vision for Goanna Hut?
Jo-Ann: To provide beautiful food we need to embrace and show the nation our foods and herbs that are available and amazing, then showcase this to the world. We are the oldest living people and our food plays a big part in this.
T2: Do you have a personal favourite of your tea blends?
Jo-Ann: My favourite is hard to pick as I use them in different ways: chilled Calm in summer; Eclipse with a dash of lemon for a non-alcoholic tea punch; and Energize is great in the cooler months to re-energise the body.
T2: What’s your favourite way to unwind with a cup of tea?
Jo-Ann: A quiet bush walk around my suburbs or sitting on the cliff face watching the whales migrate north or sitting on the sands of Botany Bay while the sound of the city rushes behind me.
