Earl Grey is an elegant and balanced blend of Sri Lankan black tea with the citrus delights of bergamot.

Origins of Earl Grey

It is well known Earl Grey tea is named after the former British prime minister Charles Grey, the second Earl of Grey. But why was it named in his honor? There are a few theories. The most heroic story is of the Earl’s staff saving the life of a boy whose father was a tea blender from China. As a thank-you gift he created Earl Grey tea in his name.

Others say the flavour combination was a streak of luck, when a shipment of black tea leaves and bergamot oranges sat side-by side en route to Charles Grey. The tea absorbed the zesty notes, and the famous blend was born. Another theory suggests the bergamot was blended specifically for the Earl to help disguise the distinct taste of his local water, which contained high levels of limescale.

However it came to be, it's one of our most loved blends. Learn more about how we brew it T2 below.

Uniquely T2 Earl Grey

Our Earl Grey blends are made with premium whole leaf tea for a full and strong taste that's uniquely T2.

In addition to the classic, we’ve blended a collection of tea with Earl Grey as a base. French Earl Grey is fragrant and fruity. It heightens traditional Earl Grey with delicate hints of rose, sunflower and hibiscus. Melbourne Grey adds smooth vanilla into the mix, creating a sweet and comforting blend.

How to brew Earl Grey

It is best drunk in the morning and early afternoon due to the caffeine content naturally found in black tea.

To enjoy Earl Grey, add your tea bag or one teaspoon of loose leaf to a mug of boiling water and brew for three to five minutes, depending on your preferred tea strength.

Once brewed, add honey or a sweetener of your choice. Earl Grey is a lighter black tea, so skip adding milk to enjoy all its nuanced flavours. Enjoy!
