Don’t take too long to indulge in oolong!

Perhaps an introvert compared to bold and brash extroverted black tea but certainly more adventurous than its quietly spoken green tea relative, oolong tea has definitely earned the accolades awarded by tea connoisseurs globally.

It combines the best qualities of black and green teas, making it the best of both worlds. If you’re keen to dabble and explore more tea treasures, you can’t go wrong with oolong. We’re here to talk you through what makes oolong tea such a special choice. But first, what even is oolong tea?

What is oolong tea?

While their roots are the same, the oolong family is raised differently from its black tea and green tea cousins. Oolong tea is only partially oxidised and semi-fermented, allowing it to develop some of the robust body of black tea and blend that with green tea's fresh and zesty goodness.

Loose leaf oolong is a tea traditionally drunk by the Chinese for centuries, known for its unique taste and aroma. It flaunts fragrant flavours with complex undertones, both delicate and noteworthy. It’s made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant, the same plant used to produce its green and black tea family members. However, oolong tea is processed differently than its cousins, which results in its distinct flavour and appearance.

The processing of oolong tea involves partially oxidising the leaves, meaning that they are allowed to wilt and turn brown before they are heated to stop the oxidation process. The degree of oxidation can vary depending on the variety of oolong tea, resulting in a range of flavour profiles, from floral and fruity to nutty and earthy.

Like the perfect marriage, oolong tea brings together the best of black and green tea, delivering less caffeine than black tea with the goodness of green tea. Oolong is the perfect tea to drink day or night, in sickness and health, to love and cherish.

What does oolong tea taste like?

The varieties of oolong tea taste craftily complex and subtly sweet, even grassy green with fresh, fragrant flutters amidst a bright and bold black tea body!

Sometimes it’s a little nutty, and people say it can be fruity too, but oolong is totally loveable for all its quirks.

Oolong is a fabulously flexible and flavoursome tea, just perfect when you feel like something different. How many ways can I drink T2 Oolong tea? To begin with, let’s try:

Pink juniper sling cold brew

For a fun-loving, fruity favourite, you can’t pass up the Pink Juniper Sling Cold Brew. This blend — with oozing flavours of pink grapefruit, yuzu and oolong tea — has the soft, subtle flavours of pink gin. We can’t think of a better way to soak up the sunlight than with an icy cold brew of this bad boy by your side. And for a cheeky, after-hours treat, this cold brew makes the perfect base to complement something a little stronger for an extra kick.

Does oolong tea contain caffeine?

Is there caffeine in oolong tea? Yes, because all teas from the Camellia sinensis plant contain caffeine to varying levels.

Unlike coffee or black tea, oolong tea benefits from containing only a small amount of caffeine. So if you need a big caffeine hit, opt for coffee. A robust cup of strong breakfast tea or a gutsy black tea brew is great for some get-up-and-go in the morning, and oolong will do that too but to a lesser degree.

If it’s an after-dinner tea you seek, oolong may be just a little bit too perky – depending on your sensitivity to caffeine and your sleep habits, of course.

How to enjoy oodles of oolong

Oolong tea is a great way to start the day, and if you don’t need a relaxing, soothing, sleepy tea like some of those available in our Wellness range, then oolong is a pleasant after-dinner tea too. Chinese oolong teas are tea-licious teas to enjoy any time a tasty brew takes your fancy!

How to make oolong tea

Shop T2 teawares to find many ways to brew your heart-warming cup of oolong tea. A handy T2 teamaker, an exquisite T2 teapot or an internationally-designed T2 tea mug with a diffuser will all brew your ooh-la-la lip-smacking oolong tea to perfection.

Being the unique individual that oolong is, it prefers to be brewed a little longer than many teas — up to six minutes, in fact. That may look like showing off, but oolong’s not a fan of getting into hot water, so keep the temp down to 90°C when you make your oolong tea. For your convenience, we have handy brewing instructions on each of our products so you can easily brew your faves.

Can I drink oolong tea every day?

Yes, you can! Aside from tantalising your tastebuds, Chinese oolong teas provide great benefits, so sipping awesome oolong every day is sure to be a good thing!

Since oolong tea contains caffeine, limiting your intake to about two or three cups per day is recommended and avoiding drinking it too close to bedtime. That way, you can have your best shot at a good night’s rest and feel rejuvenated and ready to tackle your next day.

So long to your boring tea bags — T2’s oolong tea is here to stay!
